Lady Tigers fall short 17-8 to CCS at home

Tuesday, April 12, the Whitwell Tigers softball team were back on the diamond to take on the Chargers of Chattanooga Christian School. The game would be very competitive in the early innings, but with several errors combined with solid hitting for the Chargers would be too much for the Tigers to overcome as they fell short 17-8.

The Lady Tigers had three different pitchers take the mound in this one as they tried to find their footing, Kailee Yarber would find the most success on the mound as she would have the only strikeout of the game. The Lady Tigers would have some success at the plate though with several batters with multiple hits, Addison Beason and Karleigh Dempsey would both lead the way as they each went 3 for 4 with Dempsey

bringing in two RBI.

The Lady Tigers would take to the field first, and things looked promising as they forced two outs against the first three Chargers’ batters, but with a runner on base the Chargers would single and bring in a run to take an early 1-0 lead.

Beason would lead off for the Lady Tigers and would start on a high note, getting on base with a single. Ella Grace Harvey would single with a shot to left field that brought Beason across home plate to tie the game at 1-1.

The Lady Tigers would give up another four runs in the top of the second to go down 5-1, but would match that effort in the bottom of the inning. Marissa Nunley would be walked to start off the side. Leah Easterly would be at the plate next and she would send a shot deep into center field, over the fence for a home run to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Maria Basham on the mound for the Tigers.

Basham and Beason would both get on base with a single, which brought Yarber to the plate. Yarber would ground out to first, but it would still bring Basham across home plate to make it a one point game. Dempsey would then single with a line drive to center field that brought in Beason to tie the game at 5-5, where the score would remain going into the top of the third.

Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, the top of the third is where the tide in this one would change. The Chargers would add six runs to the scoreboard, including a home run as well as giving up a walk with the bases loaded to put the Lady Tigers in the hole 11-5 going into the bottom of the third. The Lady Tigers would get anything going in the bottom of the inning, with three quick outs in the first three batters.

The Chargers would add another three runs onto the board in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 14-5, but the Lady Tigers would respond when they got to the plate. Beason would leadoff with a single,

Karleigh Dempsey watches one go over her head, she would single at this at-bat to bring in a run, tying the game at 5-5.

and Harvey would be walked to put runners on first and second. Dempsey would single with a fly ball to the fence to bring in Beason, and Mallory O’Neal would hit a fly ball that brought in Dempsey at Harvey to move the score to 14-8, but unfortunately that would be the last points the Lady Tigers would put on the board.

Another three runs from the Chargers in the top of the sixth would move the score to 17-8, where things would remain at the end of the game. The Lady Tigers will be back on the diamond Tuesday, April 19, at Baylor High School, and they’ll be back at home on Thursday, April 21, as they host Red Bank.
