Hampton saw a record-breaking season come to a close on Friday.
The Bulldogs were unable to keep pace with hot Coalfield bats late in a 14-4 decision in the Class A section on Friday at Coalfield.
Hampton finishes the year with a school-record 24 wins.
“My baseball club battled,” Hampton Head Coach Nicholas Perkins said. “The final score does not indicate how competitive this baseball game was. I am proud of my players and coaches. With a school-record 24 wins and a substate appearance, we can be nothing but appreciative.”
The Bulldogs struck first.
Hampton got on the board in the opening frame as Collin Morgan hit a triple to score Caleb Royston to give HHS a 1-0 lead.
Coalfield, however, answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 advantage after the first inning.
Neither team was able to get a run across in the third or fourth innings.
Hampton continued to battle as McKinley Kuhn hit a single to center field that scored Conor Jones and Morgan to even things up at 3-3 after the top of the fourth.
The Yellow Jackets answered once again, and in a big way as they plated six runs to take the lead.
Morgan hit a double in the fifth that scored Morgan Lyons. However, the Bulldogs were unable to get a rally going.
Morgan and Kuhn finished with two hits and two RBI apiece for the Bulldogs. Kyler Lewis, Lyons, and Jones each had a hit.
In just under three innings of work, Josh Whitson allowed just one earned run on three hits on the mound for Hampton.
