TSSAA Spring Fling: Collierville baseball wins in extra innings and more from Day 1

MURFREESBORO - Spring showers during the biggest week in the high school spring season can only mean one thing: Spring Fling has arrived. 

The spring championships began on a wet Tuesday in middle Tennessee. Several Memphis area teams got a win on Tuesday while others suffered early exits. 

Here's what happened day one for Memphis area teams in the spring championships.

Collierville baseball wins in 10 innings

The best things are worth waiting for and for the Dragons baseball program, that meant waiting 10 innings to advance in Class 4A, defeating Riverdale 6-4. 

Tyler Johns had two RBIs or the Dragons and Thomas Crabtree had three hits. On the mound, Crabtree had four strikeouts. Keaton Baird had four strikeouts as well.

Collierville (38-9) opened the game scoring three runs in the first inning. Riverdale quickly responded with two runs in the second innings. With the game tied at four after four innings, the Dragons got the go-ahead runs in the top of the 10 to seal the win. They will play Wednesday against the winner of Farragut-Hendersonville, which was suspended Tuesday night for weather.

Defending champions stunned in OT

The defending Class AAA boys soccer state champions were bounced out in the first round in a 1-0 loss to Oakland. 

The Mustangs fought for 80 minutes to a 0-0 draw a just a few minutes into the first extra time period, the game was halted due to lightning. When the game resumed, Brayden Wilson scored the game-winner in the 98th minute off Houston keeper Luke McSwain.

Keeping the pace

Freedom Prep's D'Andre Boyce grabbed a state title in the 110-meter hurdles to start off Memphis' state track meet. Memphis Middle College took second in the 4x400 relays, finishing in 1:29.89.

Mack Taylor from Wooddale took second in the 400, finishing in 49.87. Other notable finishes include Alyssa Raymond from Memphis East taking second in the long jump and a state title in the 400.
