CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Montgomery Central football heads into the 2022 season with hopes to build off last year’s playoff run. The Indians finished last season with an overall record of 9-3.

This includes coming away with a win in the first round of the playoffs against Jackson Southside. However, during the following game they were knocked out of playoff contention by Tullahoma.

Montgomery Central’s football program is led by head coach Corey Wright. This is Wright’s first season serving as the Indians head coach. He has been a part of the team’s coaching staff since the 2019-20 season.

During that timeframe, Wright has helped contribute to an overall record of 19-12.

2022 season

According to the head coach, the 2022 squad varies from previous team’s for a variety of reasons.

“This team is different due to the change in personnel,” said Wright. “We had 22 seniors graduate this past year. This includes losing all but one starter on defense. This led me to two points of emphasis early on. The first being I want the team to get stronger in the weight room. Secondly, I want to get to know one another and build a family-like atmosphere.”

In addition, Montgomery Central prioritized matching new personnel with the team’s scheme on both sides of the ball. Wright detailed that his players have bought in to their system, and they have been proactive outside of practice. The coach said at least half of the players have shown initiative and have gone to at least one camp this summer, whether it was with Austin Peay, Vanderbilt or others.

Wright has been impressed with what he’s seen from his entire team thus far. He has noticed that the group has really come together, and he credited leaders such as Kade Davis and Andrew White for their impact on the other players around them.

“I will be preaching the word togetherness all season long,” said Wright. “No matter if we win or lose, we are going to go through it together as a team. I do have expectations to go out and win every game we play. That’s the mindset we have together.”

Montgomery Central will host Sycamore High to open their season on Aug. 19.
