WCHS girls' soccer gets first win in two seasons

Week two of the high school girls’ soccer season saw the Warriorettes split their two games, getting their first win in two seasons.

On Aug. 23, the Warriorettes faced the Jackson County Blue Devils. Both teams brought strong defensive performances to the field, resulting in no score on the board for either squad at the half.

“Halftime was spent mostly discussing how to break the deadlock between the two defensive teams,” Warriorette soccer coach Mixon Moore said.

The discussion paid off. In the 62nd minute of the 80-minute match, Warriorette senior Kayleigh Brown passed the ball to freshman Katelyn Blakeman who was near the six-yard box. After taking three different shots on goal, Blakeman’s persistence paid off and she was able to knock the ball in, giving the Warriorettes what would be the winning goal as their defense continued their stellar performance.

The win was the first regular season win for the Warriorettes since 2020.

The White County team didn’t fare as well in their second game of the week. On Aug. 25, the team was on the road to play Cumberland County.

After a flurry of shots, the Warriorettes found themselves down 5 to 0 at the half. Looking to avoid the mercy rule, which sits at a nine-game advantage for either team, the Warriorettes held the Jets to 8 points on the night.

“I am proud of the effort this team gave,” Moore said. “They stuck together well under adversity.”
