The Independence football team group chat lit up late Friday, long after the second half of the Eagles' Region 7-6A game at Centennial had been pushed back to Saturday afternoon due to lightning delays.

The Eagles overcame a four-point halftime deficit and a 14-hour delay for weather to beat Centennial 17-14. Tre Hartwell broke free for a 78-yard touchdown run with 7:00 left for what was the game winner. It came after Centennial led 14-10 at halftime.

"It's crazy," Independence coach Scott Stidham said of the lengthy delay that carried over to Saturday afternoon. "I think it's one we'll all remember. We were fortunate to come out on top."

The game kicked off at about 7:45 p.m. Friday night after a 45-minute lightning delay. The contest concluded at about 1:48 p.m. Saturday after starting the second half at 12:57 p.m.

"Their school administration handled it really well," said Stidham of Centennial. "That made it really easy on us."
