CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville High School football and fans traveled to Rossview High School for the biggest rivalry game of the year, the battle for the Warfield Shield. The Wildcats retained possession of the Shield for the fifth straight contest, winning the game, 35-10. The game was a sellout with roughly 3,500 in attendance.

Clarksville wasted no time setting the tone, scoring with 7:03 left in the first quarter off a run by senior running back Jamar Carnell. This was Carnell’s first of three touchdowns on the night. He punched one in from four yards out in the second quarter, then tacked on a third in the third period.

Rossview struggled to execute offensively, only putting up a 36-yard field goal by senior Chance Siler in the first half. Sophomore quarterback Reed Bryant ran one in early in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 21-10.

Given that the Hawks had some momentum, and Carnell went down with an injury, one might have expected the game to tighten up near the end. Instead, the Wildcats responded forcefully, exploding the lead late. On a 4th and 4, James Dalrymple caught a pass for a 26-yard touchdown. Then senior quarterback Davin Garinger ran in one more touchdown to put the game on ice.

Clarksville head coach Isaac Shelby praised his defense, saying, “Coach Stanley and the rest of the staff did a really good job. I thought we scouted them really good. We had a pretty good grasp on what they were gonna do, and the kids executed the plan.

“We played good team football, we played good complementary football, which is what we challenged the kids to do the last couple weeks,” he concluded.

Shelby described Carnell’s performance, saying, “He’s a dude. He’s tough, he’s strong. What people don’t realize about him is how smart he is. He’s really, really smart and he just played incredible tonight. I’m really proud of (number) 6, I’m really proud of 7 (Garinger), the rest of that senior group.”

One chant could be heard several times from the Wildcat faithful: “Fivepeat.” The teams have clashed in five of the last six years, skipping the rivalry in 2020 due to the pandemic, and Rossview has not claimed the Shield since 2016. Clearly, the students who wear purple take pride in this.

But to Coach Shelby, it’s just one more win. “I don’t know if five is more important than one. You know what I mean? Rossview’s a really good football program. Todd Hood is a really good football coach. I’m proud of our kids for winning this time, and just kind of taking it year-by-year. But (Rossview is) a tough place to win. It’s really difficult, they do a great job, and I’m proud of our kids.”
