The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Wayne County Wildcats 40-14 at home Friday for their fourth loss of the season.
The Hornets were held scoreless through the first three quarters and were not able to come back from the sizable deficit they faced going into the final period.
The Hornets started the game with the ball but were forced to punt it away to the Wildcats.
The Wildcats had a long touchdown on their first drive called back by a holding penalty, but they still scored a rushing touchdown later in the possession to make it a 7-0 game with about six minutes remaining in the first quarter.
After a series of punts by both teams, the Wildcats fumbled the ball away with the Hornets recovering the loose ball in enemy territory.
However, the Hornets would not be able to advance the ball and gave it back to the Wildcats after a turnover on downs.
The Wildcats scored touchdowns on their next two possessions to grow the deficit to 21-0 with less than four minutes remaining in the first half.
The Hornets pushed the ball to midfield late in the half before a turnover on downs halted the drive.
They trailed 21-0 at halftime.
An interception thrown by the Hornets early in the third quarter set up another touchdown for the Wildcats to put the deficit at 27-0 with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
The Hornets forced a turnover following a punt as they recovered a Wayne County fumble at midfield, but the ensuing possession would end in another punt.
The Wildcats scored another touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it a 34-0 game.
The Hornets notched their first touchdown of the day on their next drive as Coastlon Ringer broke off a 66-yard touchdown run to put the score at 34-7 with 11 minutes remaining.
The Wildcats responded back with one more touchdown drive as they brought their lead up to 33 points with about seven minutes to play.
The Hornets put together another scoring drive on their next possession as Kyrin Baxter ended the drive with a rushing touchdown. The score made it a 40-14 game with less than three minutes on the clock.
The Hornets forced another fumble to get the ball back at Wayne County’s 38-yard line, but they were not able to score again in the time remaining as they lost by 26 points.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in regional play.
They will next play Friday at home against Lookout Valley High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
