The importance of starting fast was not lost on West Creek in its district volleyball match with Rossview Tuesday.

The Lady Coyotes jumped out to a decisive lead in each game it won, and they used the energy to beat the Lady Hawks in four games, winning 25-22, 18-25, 25-14 and 25-19.

Mona Meredith and Saniyah Collier had 10 and eight kills, respectively, and Jayla Wiggins had 27 assists, to go with seven aces, helping the Lady Coyotes set the tone quickly in their final regular-season district match. Meredith also had three aces.

“Volleyball is very much a game of momentum, so if you can have that energy, you can have that momentum,” said West Creek coach Josh Stoeckl. “When you go flat and do not have the energy, our girls struggle.

“We really preach that. Come out, be excited, cheer for each other and try to carry that energy as much as you can.”

In the game it won, Rossview jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but the Lady Hawks couldn’t match their quick start in the final two games.

“It’s a mind game and those quick starts definitely affect it,” said Lady Hawks interim coach Lindsie Fernlund.

With the regular season heading into the final couple of weeks, Stoeckl said the Lady Coyotes are trending up, especially with their consistent energy and play from their backups.

“We have made some adjustments, we’ve had some players come in during key games,” said Stoeckl, who watched the Lady Coyotes move to 15-13, which included a 4-4 district finish. “It’s not just the starting six, we’ve got girls coming off the bench playing a contributing role and we are more comfortable going to the bench.”

The Lady Coyotes jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first game and had a five-point lead when the Lady Hawks made a late run, eventually tying the score at 22-22 before West Creek scored the final three deciding points.

Rossview controlled the second set from the beginning, leading 7-2 and 11-4, eventually pulling away for the seven-point win.

The Lady Coyotes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third, but the Lady Hawks took control to pull within 13-12. However, the Lady Coyotes closed the game with a 12-2 run to clinch the win.

The deciding match witnessed West Creek leading 21-11 before Rossview made a late rally attempt. The Lady Coyotes had enough to hold off the rally to clinch the match.

“For the last couple of years, we’ve had a problem getting over the hump,” Stoeckl said. “We could win a set here, we could win a set there against good teams, but this year we had struggled with that still.

“Tonight, the first set we looked good, the second set we came out flat, the third set we made adjustments and it rolled into the fourth set.”

Fernlund said the Lady Hawks will concentrate on learning how to finish.

“We definitely need to focus on finishing,” said Fernlund, who watched the Lady Hawks drop to 10-11 overall. “We need to focus on finishing stronger and placing the ball. This is a match we are going to take into practice tomorrow.

“We learned a lot today, definitely things we need to work on.”
