CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville Academy wide receiver Jacques Wyatt had a distinct game this past week that earned him Clarksville Now Player of the Week honors.

The Cougars offense was firing on all cylinders enroute to their latest win against Fayette Academy. They compiled 49 points, and 462 total yards during their victory. Wyatt played a key part in their offensive attack on the night.

Clarksville Academy focused on attacking on the ground, but the Cougars found ways to stretch the field with their 6-foot-4 wide receiver on the outside.

The senior finished the night with 7 receptions for 100 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Wyatt accounted for 54% of the team’s receiving yards during the game.

Wyatt said he let the plays come to him throughout the night. He figured that his opponent would place a safety overtop to stop the deep ball to begin the game. Eventually, they stacked the box to stop the run game and left Wyatt with one on one opportunities on the outside.

2022-23 season

Wyatt plays a key role in the Cougars offensive attack. He’s one reason the team is averaging around 38 points per game.

According to Max Preps, Wyatt currently has 25 receptions for 445 yards and 9 touchdowns for the season. He’s ranked second on the team in receiving yards and first in total receptions and receiving touchdowns.

The senior wide receiver has set high expectations for himself and his team. Wyatt mentioned to Clarksville Now that the hope is to become state champions, but also has his eyes on breaking a couple of school records as well.

Coaches’ corner

“Jaq is crucial with what we do,” said Clarksville Academy head coach Scott Murray. “It’s difficult to load the box with him out wide, so that benefits our running game and allows us to find other receivers open down the field.

“Jaq is gifted, and stands at 6 foot 4 after growing an inch over the past couple months.  He’s really worked on his ball skills and route running this past summer and it shows. For someone who has played football for only two years, he’s become a really good route runner, and his ball skills are second to none.”

Murray expects Wyatt’s play to translate to the next level with an FCS or FBS football program. Wyatt remains uncommitted up to this point in the season, but confessed his decision will take place once the Cougars season is over.

Clarksville Academy (4-2) is scheduled to face Donelson Christian Academy (3-3) as their next opponent. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.

Honorable mention

Several other players had great weeks on the football field. Here are some that merit special mention:

  • Clarksville Academy quarterback DJ Merriweather; 11 rushes for 255 yards and completed 15 of his 19 passes for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns. (Merriweather had a great week, but was Player of the Week earlier this season.)
  • Clarksville High running back Jamar Carnell; 14 carries for 137 yards, 4 rushing touchdowns and he had 4 tackles and a forced fumble on defense. (Carnell is another player who had a great week, but has been recognized already as well.)
  • Northwest cornerback and wide receiver Deonta Crawford; 3 catches for 67 yards and finished with 8.5 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 interception on defense.
