The girls soccer team of Boyd-Buchanan matched the effort of last Thursday's playoff win with another 6-0 victory, this week against the Christian Academy of Knoxville in a Division II-A East Region match. The Lady Buccaneers put the pressure on the visiting Lady Warriors from the first whistle and used solid team execution to muscle their way to the victory.

Most scoring took place in the first half, where the Lady Bucs advanced the ball down the field with ease.

Accurate through balls from a multitude of players helped the home team retain possession in the early minutes while brisk cuts off the ball kept them one step ahead.

Boyd-Buchanan peppered CAK goalkeeper Olivia Gray with over ten shots on goal during the first ten minutes. Gray kept her cool despite the onslaught, saving several tough shots in athletic fashion, but they just kept coming.

On the Lady Bucs’ first score of the night, Layla Smith fielded a pass from Abigail Aman on the left side of the field about ten yards away from the goal. She burst past the defender that had been keeping step with her and was able to juke out Gray and power one through the back of the net with uncanny composure.

This omen of things to come took place at the 35:03 mark. Two minutes later, another shot from the cleats of Smith came careening towards the goal. This time, the visiting goalie was able to dive to her right and deflect it from the net. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they weren’t out of the woods yet. Jenna Randolph of Boyd-Buchanan fielded the miss and gently pushed the ball into the goal to give her team 2-0 advantage.

Midfielder Elizabeth Post scored again just seven minutes later and it was clear that the wind had been taken out of the away team’s sails.

Sophomore Caroline Schmid showed resilience for the Warriors despite the score. She used her booming leg to clear the ball in several tense situations. Even though her team’s defense was lacking, she stepped up to stop the bleeding.

In spite of her efforts, Boyd-Buchanan rolled to the victory with little difficulty.

“I thought we were very efficient in front of the goal,” said Bucs’ Head Coach Todd Ledbetter. “We were defensively sound and executed our game plan by connecting passes and moving off the ball.”

On Thursday, Boyd-Buchanan will take on local rival Silverdale Academy. Silverdale defeated the Buccaneers during the regular season, but Coach Ledbetter believes in his team, saying, “We have been improving every single game and as long as we stick to our gameplan I think we can beat anyone.”

Goal Scorers:

(BBS) Layla Smith (2), Jenna Randolph (1), Elizabeth Post (1), Gavynn Davis (1), Abigail Aman (1).
