Hampton scored early and often on Friday night at J.C. Campbell Stadium and took a 58-8 win over Cumberland Gap to sweep to the conference 1-2A championship. The Bulldogs scored on passes of 52 and 39 from junior Dylan Trivett to Chance Point and four touchdown runs to take a 45-0 halftime advantage and force a running clock in the second half.
“This is just step one,” Bulldogs head coach Michael Lunsford said. “We hadn’t won it in a couple of years so it feels good, but it is just step one.”
Senior Levi Lunsford had a five-yard touchdown run while sophomore Dominique Burleson had a 28-yard scoring run and senior Johnathan Greenwell had a 42-yard scoring run and Trivett had a 25-yard touchdown run in the first half.
Lunsford rushed for a game high 156 yards with a touchdown and three point after conversions.
“The blocking was great,” Lunsford said. “The guys up front always open holes for us to run through. It’s great to win the conference and after last week we learned a lot that we can use over the last few weeks and into the playoffs.”
The Bulldogs opened with a 52-yard touchdown strike from Trivett to Point on the first play of the game to take an 8-0 lead after Lunsford ran in the two-point conversion.
“Dylan is throwing the ball well,” Michael Lunsford said. “Early in the season he was kind of hurt and we brought him along slowly. Chance is a great athlete and if you get him in space, he can really hurt you.”
The ‘Dogs defense held Cumberland Gap to just 57 yards of total offense until the fourth quarter when the Panthers put on a scoring drive that was capped off with a six-yard touchdown run from Ethan Thomas to make it a 58-8 game after Hunter Gibson’s two-point run.
Freshman Weston Hicks scored for the ‘Dogs on a seven-yard run in the third quarter and senior Luke Belcher scored on a 65-yard blast up the middle to cap the scoring for the game.
