The West Creek Lady Coyotes hosted Republic High School on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and emerged with a huge 49-11 win.
West Creek wanted to make sure they started their season off with a statement, and a statement they made. They started the game on a 13-0 run, and ended the first quarter up 20-3. They manhandled Republic defensively, and head coach Aaron Keener was proud of the team’s effort.
“The girls were amped up, they played with a lot of intensity, and they played for each other,” he said. “We might not have played as disciplined as we wanted to, which we will work on, but they were always in the right place at the right time.”
The Coyotes were led by newcomer Joanna Harris, who didn’t lead the team in points, but was a vocal leader and was dishing out assists all night, along with steal steals.
“(Harris) is going to be the one to calm us down when we’re in the middle of the storm, and we have a great team with good seniors,” Keener said. “As they play together and gain cohesiveness, we’re going to be alright.”
West Creek never trailed, allowing an average of 1.5 shots made per quarter for Republic. It was a complete wire-to-wire win for the Lady Coyotes.
For a program that doesn’t have the best history, it’s a huge win to kick the season off.
“It’s a big confidence booster, it solidifies what we have been preaching all the time, to stay the course,” Keener said. “We just keep fighting, learning and getting better day by day. It’s a huge win, but there’s work to be done.”
