The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Silverdale Baptist Academy Seahawks 54-49 at Whitwell High School Saturday for their second win of the season.
In their first of two games at Whitwell for the day, the Lady Hornets trailed by as many as 12 points early in the third quarter before rallying back to take the lead in the fourth quarter and ultimately win the contest.
The Lady Hornets opened the game with a 10-3 run and maintained a steady lead for the rest of the opening period.
They led 16-11 after one quarter.
However, the Seahawks ended the first half on an 18-3 run to flip the scoreboard in their favor.
Huntland trailed 31-23 at halftime.
The deficit was steady throughout most of the third quarter with the Lady Hornets scoring the last four points of the period to make up some ground.
They trailed 44-39 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hornets followed up by scoring the first eight points of the fourth quarter as the 12-0 run across the final two periods gave them the lead once again.
The Seahawks cut the lead down to a single point a few times late, but the Lady Hornets held them off as Logan McLennan hit a few free throws in the final minute to put the final deficit at five.
McLennan led the Lady Hornets with 19 points for the game, followed by Jocy May with 11 points and Ashtyn Danley with 10.
Aysia Williams scored eight points, and Maddie Burks and Bailey Morris scored three points each.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 2-0 on the season.
Lady Hornets 76, Whitwell 61
The Lady Hornets beat the Whitwell Lady Tigers 76-61 on the road Saturday for their third win of the season.
For the second time on Saturday, the Lady Hornets rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to get a victory behind a strong offensive effort.
The teams traded baskets to start the game before the Lady Tigers ended the first quarter by scoring six straight points.
The Lady Hornets trailed 15-9 after one quarter.
The Lady Tigers also scored the first 15 points of the second quarter to bring the early deficit up to more than 20 points.
The Lady Hornets were able to get their offense going midway through the period, but they still faced a large deficit at halftime. May scored 10 of Huntland’s 15 points in the second quarter.
They trailed 40-24 at the end of the first half.
The Lady Hornets scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to erase a majority of the deficit, and they tied the score later in the period on a free throw by Morris.
The Lady Hornets briefly took the lead on a shot by Williams in the final minute of the period, but the Lady Tigers hit a tying layup with seconds remaining.
The score was tied at 47-47 going into the final period.
With the score still tied at 53-53 early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Hornets went on an 11-1 run to pull ahead by double digits, and they maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way before winning by 15 points.
May led the Lady Hornets with 21 points for the game, followed by McLennan with 18 points and Danley with 14.
Williams scored 12 points, Morris scored seven, and Kinsley Kilpatrick and Burks scored two points each.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 3-0 on the season.
They will next play Monday against Soddy Daisy High School at Whitwell in a first-round game for the Whitwell Thanksgiving Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
