Warriorettes defeat strong Red Boiling Springs team

Posted

Having already played one game on the day, the Warriorettes came into their Dec. 19 game with Red Boiling Springs a little tired.  The game would turn into a match-up of two stars.  Claire Fleming would score 34 points for the Lady Bulldogs against the Warriors but would not be the game’s leading scorer.  That honor belonged to White County’s Nia Powers who scored 35 points.  Red Boiling Springs is a very impressive 1A team that could make a deep run at the end of the season.

Nia Powers and Ava Jones used their size to their advantage in the first quarter to get the Warriorettes the early lead.  Lexi Golden would get hot from behind the arc and would hit back-to-back threes.  White County would lead 21-15 after one quarter.

Powers continued her dominance in the second quarter. No one could stop her once she got the ball in the post. The Warriorettes were smart enough to keep feeding her the ball.  Red Boiling Springs tried to double and triple team her, but their efforts would fail as she just kept scoring. KK McDonald and Lexi Golden would hit threes and the Warriorettes would lead 47 to 34 at halftime.  The Red Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs would not lay down though and they would come out fighting in the second half.

Nia Powers and KK McDonald would work hard in the third quarter. McDonald kept hitting shots and Powers would add to her point total. Lexi Golden would also hit a three. The score after three was 65-53.

The fourth quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs make a run.  The Warriors had no answer for Claire Fleming. It seemed like everything she threw up was going in. Her heroics helped her team make a run that tied the score at 67 with just three minutes left in the game. Karley Gentry really took over in the final minutes of the game for the Warriorettes.  She hit a huge three-point basket as well as a two-pointer.  The home team was able to hold on for a 74-70 win.  Games like the one played by these two teams will pay off for both squads as they move forward in this tournament, district play and beyond.
