Friday Round-up: Rangers Upend North Greene; Lady Warriors Take Road Win

Unaka 84, North Greene 75 (boys)
The Rangers used a quick start for an upset of the state’s 7th-ranked team in Class A.

Unaka jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with five straight points from Landon Ramsey while

Mason Wilson added a 3-pointer during the win. After NG trimmed the lead to 24-21, key shots from Johnny Douglas, Ramsey and Wilson helped UHS take a 43-29 lead and the Rangers maintained a 45-32 lead at the half.

North Greene cut back into the lead as Unaka held a four-point advantage with a quarter to play, but the Rangers secured the win with key shots in the in closing minutes.

Ramsey had 35 points to lead Unaka, while Joe-Z Blamo added 20 points – 13 of which he scored in the final eight minutes. Wilson had 18 points.

Jason Britton set a new North Greene single-game record with 56 points to pace the Huskies.

Johnson County 68, Happy Valley 33 (boys)
The Warriors were unable to shake off a slow start on the way.

Johnson County jumped out to a 24-8 lead in the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 41-19 by the break.

HV kept battling but the Longhorns limited HV offensively to secure the win.

Dakota Grindstaff led HV with nine points, while James Murray and Ron Parker had seven points apiece.

Happy Valley 63, Johnson County 49 (girls)
Happy Valley jumped out and took care of business for a road win.

The Lady Warriors took a 23-11 lead in the first quarter of play.

After Johnson County held the Lady Warriors to just five points in the second quarter, HV was able to keep Johnson County at bay in the final two stanzas to secure the win.

Kadie Bailey had 21 points to lead HV, while Marcida Moore had 20 points. Mailey Guy had 18 points.

North Greene 39, Unaka 36 (girls)
Unaka came out on the wrong side of a heartbreaker.

North Greene’s Sonya Wagner hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left that proved to be the game-winner in a back-and-forth battle.

After North Greene led 12-7 after a quarter of play, Lyndie Ramsey hit a shot at the buzzer to send Unaka into the half with a 17-16 advantage.

The teams continued to go back and forth trading shots in the second half.

An early fourth quarter 7-0 run gave Unaka a 31-27 lead, but the Lady Huskies battled back to take the win in the closing seconds.

Ramsey had 24 points for the Lady Rangers. Haley Taylor scored five points, while Jill Faust added three points.
