Tigerettes’ can’t hold lead vs. Lawrence Co.

LEWISBURG — The Marshall County Tigerettes held the Lawrence County Lady Wildcats scoreless for seven minutes and used a 7-0 run to maintain the lead midway through the second quarter, but the Lady Wildcats warmed up with success from 3-point land and never looked back as the Tigerettes fell 61-34 in a District 8-AAA basketball contest Friday night.
Lawrence County (15-5, 2-2) jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the opening quarter before the Tigerette combination of Demiyah Blackman and Mashawna Ridley took over on the offensive end.
Blackman finished with six points while Ridley added five as Marshall County (12-6, 1-3) scored the final seven points and took an 11-7 lead to the second quarter.
Points were scarce in the quarter for the Tigerettes, but Marshall County still led before the Lady Wildcats got hot with five treys and took the lead for good at 13-11 on a field goal with 3:59 left.
The Lady Wildcats outscored the Tigerettes 22-2 and took a 29-13 lead into the intermission.
The scoring struggles continued for Marshall County in the third quarter as the Lady Wildcats continued to find success from the outside.
Lawrence County added to its lead with three treys and outscored the Tigerettes 17-4 to take a 46-17 lead to the final quarter.
The Tigerettes got untracked and outscored the Lady Wildcats 17-15 in the quarter as Blackman led the way with eight points while Ridley added six free throws.
It was too much of a hill to climb for the Tigerettes as Lawrence County took the district win.
"I'm proud of us. We played hard," Coach David Steely of the Tigerettes said.  "It's been awhile since against a good, high quality team we've come out and been able to compete and be winning for a quarter and a half."
"That was progress," Steely added. "Now we've got to learn when they answer, to take a deep breath and answer again and hang right there with them."
"We're a lot better than we were a year ago."
Harli Johnson scored 11 points and Cami Pigg added 10 to lead the Lady Wildcats.
Blackman led the Tigerettes with 20 points while Ridley netted 11.
The Lady Wildcats were 7-of-10 from the free throw line while Marshall County was 13-of-19.
But the big stat was from outside the arc as Lawrence County connected on 12 treys while the Tigerettes made just one.
"They did get red hot," Steely said. "We didn't go into the game thinking we were going to give them 3s."
"We got carried away and overhelped a little bit," Steely added. "When we overhelped, they made us pay."
