No. 5 McKenzie Defeats McEwen

McKENZIE (January 27) — The McKenzie Rebels defeated the McEwen Warriors 71-61. The Rebels started the game of more than 20 points in the first quarter.

The Rebels took a fast lead in the first quarter scoring 23 points. Zay Webber had seven points in the first quarter. Webber drove to the basket and drew a foul for a 3-point play. He then drove to the basket for two more and drained two points from the free throw line. Stafford Roditis drained two 3-pointers. Carter Kee chalked up five points in the first quarter. Zach Aird drained a 3-pointer, and Bryson Steele drove to the basket for two points.

Marcus Carter drove to the basket for eight points for the Warriors. Cade Dreaden drove to the basket for two points, then added one point from the free throw line. Hawkins Winstead tacked on two points from the line. The Warriors trailed 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Rebels added to their lead during the second quarter. Aird drained two 3-pointers. Webber and Roditis drove to the basket for two points. Tate Surber tacked on two points.

The Warriors chalked up 15 points. Caleb Coates drained two free throws and then drove to the basket for two points. Case Green made a 3-point shot, then had two points. Dreaden added four points in the paint. Carter Tolene tacked on two points. The Rebels led the Warriors 35-28 at halftime.

The Rebels kept their lead through the third quarter and ended the quarter with an eleven point lead. Steele chalked up eleven points. Steele drove to the basket for ten points, and tacked on one front the free throw line. Surber had a shot in the paint for two points. Roditis had four points during the third quarter.

McEwen added 13 points to the board during the third. Coates and Winstead had five points each, and Green had 3-points behind the arc. The Warriors trailed 52-41 going into the final quarter.

The Warriors chalked up 20 points in the fourth quarter. Landon Davis came off the bench with six points. Carter had four points. Winstead and Dreaden had two points each. Coates and Green drained a shot from behind the arc each.

The Rebels secured their victory with a 19-point quarter. Aird drained two 3-pointers, then drove to the basket for two more points. Hayden Garrett and Surber drained a 3-point shot each. Steele had a shot in the paint for two points. Webber drove to the basket for two points, then tacked on one point from the free throw line. McKenzie defeated McEwen 71-61 on Homecoming night.

McKenzie is ranked at number 5 in the Associated Press Prep poll.

The Rebels will travel to Big Sandy High School on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Tip-off is after the conclusion of the girls’ game.
