The McCallie swimming and diving team won three individual state championship races February 11, and sophomore Marvin Johnson set two state records to lead the Blue Tornado to the 2023 Tennessee Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association State Championship. The win was the 22nd state title overall for McCallie and the third since 2019.
Johnson set state records in the 50 Freestyle (19.57) and the 100 Freestyle (43.60) and was named Boys Swimmer of the Meet. He was also part of the second-place 200-Medley Relay Team and the second-place 400 Freestyle Relay Team.
The old state record in the 50 was 20.28 set in 2015, and the old 100 record was 44.60 set in 2017, which he shattered by exactly one second.
McCallie outscored second-place Baylor 352-243 in the final team standings.
Additionally, the 200 Freestyle Relay squad of Maxwell Grutter, Max Manolache, Chandler Neill and Jackson Vineyard won the state title in 1:23.45, an automatic All-America qualifying time. The second-place 400 Freestyle Relay team (Benton Grutter, Max Manolache, Jackson Vineyard, Marvin Johnson) also met the automatic All-American standard with a time of 3:03.46.
