Whit Muschamp decided there was no need to delay his decision any longer.

The Baylor School quarterback, who will be a senior next season, has committed to Vanderbilt after a recent visit to Nashville.

“I was up there last week and got to watch a practice and talk with some of the players, and I fell in love with all of it,” said Muschamp, who announced his committment on his Twitter account Saturday afternoon. “After speaking with the other players there, they believe in the direction of the program and that we will be competing for championships soon.

“I sat down with my parents, and we discussed it and decided this was the right time for me to go ahead and commit.”

Rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports, Muschamp is the third player to commit to the Commodores for the 2024 signing class and the second quarterback from Chattanooga in the group. He joins rival McCallie’s Jeremy St. Hilaire, who committed to Vanderbilt one month ago, and Callahan Blair, a defensive lineman from Clearwater, Florida.

“So my roommate is Max LeBlanc, who is also from Canada and introduced me to Jeremy,” Muschamp said. “He’s a great guy and a really good player, and we will bring a lot of different things to the table with how each of us play. I’m looking forward to getting to know him better and competing with him.

“This is a really big deal for me to have this commitment made, so now I can just concentrate on getting better with my teammates for next season and make it more about them and us as a team instead of about me.”

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Muschamp also had offers from Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Tulane and Virginia, among others.

In helping lead the Red Raiders to last season’s TSSAA Division II-AAA championship — it was the program’s second state title and came 49 years after the first — Muschamp threw for 3,187 yards and 29 touchdowns during his junior season. That included a 252-yard, two-touchdown performance in the BlueCross Bowl title victory against Montgomery Bell Academy in early December at Finley Stadium.

“The first time I saw him throw a football was when he was in sixth grade, and it didn’t take long to recognize he has a gift,” Baylor coach Erik Kimrey said. “The way the ball comes out of his hand and to be able to throw it with such accuracy, even on the move, and the consistency he plays with are all special talents.

“Whit can extend plays with his athleticism, and whenever I call a bad play, he makes me look a lot better than I am. He has elite accuracy, poise and instincts for the game and has a real chance to help Vandy win a lot of games.”

Muschamp — the son of Georgia co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp — is already the fourth player from the Chattanooga area to commit to a Southeastern Conference program for the 2024 signing class, joining Hilaire as well as McCallie defensive lineman Carson Gentle and Bradley Central defensive back Marcus Goree, who both picked Tennessee.
