The Henry County High School Lady Patriots softball team opened the season with an 11-6 victory over visiting Lexington on Monday.

The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first inning and then added two runs in the second and two more runs in the third on the way to a convincing victory. Starting pitcher Celia Lamkin gave up a few runs, but also struck out seven and earned the complete game win.

"It's always good to win on opening day, especially against a quality team like Lexington,” Henry County coach Renae Lassiter said. “We came out with our bats on fire. We were looking for our pitch and driving it. Celia was strong in the circle. She bounced back (after a tough third inning). She's an experienced pitcher and it's not easy to rattle her.”

The Lady Patriots (1-0) hosted Huntingdon on Tuesday.

HENRY COUNTY 11, LEXINGTON 6

Lexington started the scoring with a home run in the first at-bat to go up 1-0.

That deficit didn't last long, however, as Henry County put up seven runs in the bottom of the first. Emma Thompson drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game and then Allison Glatt singled in a run. A bases-loaded hit batsman made it 3-1 and then, one out later, Alley French was also hit by a pitch to put Henry County up 4-1. A sacrifice fly by Breely Peirpoint made it 5-1.

The runs kept on coming on a bases-loaded walk to Lamkin and another run scored from third on a wild pitch that put the Lady Patriots up 7-1.

Henry County added two more runs in the second inning on a line drive two-run home run by Andie Barrett and the Lady Patriots went ahead 9-1.

Lamkin ran into trouble in the top of the third as the Lady Tigers pushed across three runs to cut Henry County's lead to 9-4. The Lady Patriots continued to add runs, however, scoring twice in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI single by Thompson.

Working with an 11-4 lead, Lamkin regained control of the game and didn't give up any more runs until the Lady Tigers added two in the top of the seventh. Lamkin closed out the game with a strikeout and a ground ball to earn the win.

The Lady Patriots finished with eight hits. Lamkin went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and scored a pair of runs. Barrett and Thompson each drove in three runs while Glatt, French and Peirpoint each had one RBI. Barrett hit a home run. Henry County stranded seven runners.

Lamkin gave up six runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Only five of those runs were earned as the Lady Patriots committed three errors.
