UNIONVILLE — For the first time since 2013, the Community Vikings opened their season with a 2-0 record after a late second-half goal was the difference in a 2-1 victory over the Watertown Purple Tigers in a soccer contest Thursday night.
Community (2-0) battled the Purple Tigers for the upper hand, but neither team could find the back of the net as the score was deadlocked 0-0 at the half.
After the game remained scoreless midway through the second half, the Vikings finally broke the ice as Ramon Hernandez scored off a header from Randy Anica on a free kick to give Community a 1-0 lead.
The Purple Tigers tied it at 1-1 on a shot from the top of the box in the 68th minute before the Vikings scored the decisive goal.
In the 72nd minute, defender Jacob Graham dribbled the ball up the sideline and passed the ball on a cross to Andres Abad.  Abad was able to head the ball in front of the net to Hernandez, who finished with the go-ahead goal and put the Vikings up 2-1.
Meanwhile, Viking goalkeeper Reily Anica had six saves, with one crucial diving save that kept Community on top.
Community faces Marshall County on Monday at home.
