Ty Wilson is ready for a break.

Wilson announced his resignation as Maplewood boys basketball coach on Tuesday after 17 years and a gold ball trophy. He will remain at the school as the dean of students and school athletic director.

"I think I'm looking for different endeavors," said Wilson, 48. "I think it's time for me to pass the torch and let someone else try and take it a little further.

"I've taken it as far as I can take it. I want to see somebody else just do something greater than I've accomplished."

Wilson, a Pearl-Cohn graduate, spent five seasons as an assistant under former M.L. King coach Doc Shelton from 2001-2006 before taking the Maplewood job. Wilson led the Panthers to two state tournament appearances. Maplewood reached the Class AA final four in 2010 and won it in 2017.

Maplewood went 29-7 in 2017, beating Knoxville Catholic 60-57 in the TSSAA Class AA championship to become the first Metro Nashville Public Schools program to win a state title since Shelton and M.L. King did it in 1996. East Nashville is the only other MNPS program to win it since Maplewood.

Maplewood basketball coach Ty Wilson resigned after 17 seasons with the school with one state title. He will remain as the athletic director and dean of students.

"That was a special year," Wilson said. "My assistant coaches at the time and I always reminisce around the state tournament. We start sending out pictures that time of year."

Wilson won over 330 games in his coaching tenure at Maplewood.
