Coffee County football coach Doug Greene said he has resigned two games into his fifth season because of medical reasons.

The position is the first Nashville area vacancy for the 2023 Tennessee high school football season.

Greene resigned as coach effective Thursday, but plans to continue to teach at Coffee County, according to a release sent by Coffee County co-athletic director Brandon McWhorter.

Defensive coordinator Roger Haynes will oversee the program's daily operations for the remainder of the season, according to the release. Coffee County plays at Shelbyville on Friday night.

Coffee County is 1-1, but has been outscored 23-10. The Red Raiders lost the annual Coffee Pot rivalry game 16-0 to Tullahoma in Week 2. Coffee County won the rivalry game with the Wildcats just one time — in 2022 — during his tenure as coach.

Greene finished his tenure 21-24. His best season was last season when the Red Raiders went 9-3, losing 35-31 to Blackman in the second round of the TSSAA Class 6A playoffs. That marked the second straight season Coffee County reached the postseason after going 6-14 his first two years.

Greene was an assistant at Coffee County from 1993-99.
