The York Institute Dragonettes got back in the win column Thursday evening as they swept Monterey in District 7A volleyball action, 3-0.
“We played pretty well,” said York head coach Michael Green. “We’ve had a long week so it was good to come in and get a little confidence booster.”
The Dragonettes opened the week with two games going to 5 sets as they defeated Jackson County on Monday before falling to Gordonsville on Tuesday.
“We didn’t make the mistakes tonight we’d been making throughout the week,” Green said. “We communicated better and our serving was better. We got into that third set and got some younger players in there tonight.”
York cruised to a 25-11 victory in the first set before battling to a 25-22 win in the second and 25-20 victory in the third.
The Dragonettes came out of the gate hot as they jumped out to a 12-2 advantage in the opening set. York pushed ahead to a 21-8 lead before closing the set with a 25-11 victory.
Monterey responded to take a 6-3 lead early in the second set behind 3 consecutive aces from libero Ali Novak.
York retook the lead at 7-6 via a service ace from their libero Annabeth Dunford and held a narrow advantage over the Lady Wildcats until a Josi Linder kill gave the Dragonettes a 25-17 victory in the set.
York Institute opened the third set on a 5-0 run on 5 consecutive serves from Callie Franklin en route to a 20-13 advantage.
“Raylee Werner has been hitting the ball good and Callie (Franklin) does it all,” Green said. “Emma Cooper got up off the floor better tonight.”
Monterey responded to tie the third set at 20 before York Institute closed the game on a 5-0 run capped off by a Linder kill to win 25-20 and take the match, 3-0.
Up next for the Dragonettes is a trip to Red Boiling Springs on Tuesday while Monterey is set to host Clarkrange.
