York Sweeps Monterey To Open District 3-A Tournament

by Rusty Ellis

The York Institute Dragonettes rolled on Monday to open the District 3-A Tournament, as they took down Monterey 3-0 at home.

After a dominant 25-11 win in the first set, the Dragonettes jumped out to a 20-3 lead in the second. The Lady Wildcats battled and scratched across a few more points, but it was ultimately York who would win the set by a 25-9 count.

The third set saw Monterey play York as tough as they could, as the game made it to 18-18 before York finally pulled away. There, it was back-to-back aces from Raylee Werner that gave the Dragonettes a 20-18 lead, and they scored five of the final six points to close out the sweep 25-19.

It was a dominant effort for the Dragonettes, though head coach Michael Green certainly saw some things he believes his team can do even better.

“We played fairly well, even after seeing them last week,” Green said. “Serving still isn’t where we want it to be and we hit it into the net a few times, but overall we played three good sets.”

Serving is certainly something Green plans on emphasizing as the tournament moves forward, as he knows they’ll have to be better in order to make another deep postseason run.

“We’ve got to focus on serving the ball over and in,” Green said. “We’re not consistent with that, and we just need to hit the ball more. We need more hits.”

The final three matches of the district tournament will be played on Tuesday at York.
