January 5 – Chester Co. Eagles win Huntingdon Christmas Tournament

Last week, the Chester County Eagles Basketball team was able to come out on top in the Huntingdon Point Guard Coca-Cola Classic Christmas Tournament and win the championship versus Greenfield 53-52.

January 12 – CCHS Basketball starts 2023 with wins over JCM

The CCHS Basketball teams started out 2023 with wins over Jackson Central-Merry in their second matchup against the Cougars. The results were the same as before with both the Eagles and Eaglettes winning versus the JCM Cougars.

The Lady Cougars did not stand a chance against the Eaglettes.

The CCHS Eagles won their game versus JCM 62-39. In the beginning of the game, it was close in the first quarter. The Cougars, after being down 7-0, came back on Chester County’s boys and eventually started winning 10- 9. However, at the end of the quarter, with less than a second left, the Eagles were able to take the lead back with a very

quick buzzer shot by Hunt Pipkin making the score 11-10. After that point, the Eagles controlled the game.

January 19 – CCHS Basketball defeats Liberty, falls to Crockett

Last week started off with a good pair of wins versus Liberty for Chester County High School Basketball, but ended with losses against Crockett County.

January 26 – Williamson scores 1,000th point against Panthers

With one starting Eaglette still down last Tuesday, January 17, when Chester County High School played the Riverside Panthers, the final result was a loss for the Eaglettes with a final score of 62-41.

Point guard Jariyah Williamson was able to make her mark in CCHS Basketball history with a milestone of scoring her 1,000th point during the game. She was presented with CCHS Ball for her great accomplishment.

February 2 – Eagles and Eaglettes both lead in district

The Chester County Basketball teams are representing the county well in district play as they both lead the district with a district record of 2- 0. This lead comes after both the Eaglettes and Eagles defeated McNairy Central and Hardin County last week.

February 9 – Eagles remain on top in district

The CCHS Eagles basketball team is in great position after two more wins that occurred Friday and Saturday. The two victories against McNairy and Lexington have them sitting at number one in the district with an undefeated district record of 4-0.

February 16 – Chester Co. Basketball enters the district tournament/ Barham recognized for 1,000th career point

The Chester County Eagles almost won all of their district games in the regular season, but were one point away-when they lost to Hardin County at Hardin County last Tuesday.

That night, the Chester County girls were able to vanquish the Lady Tigers 44-10.

Chester County Eagles player Chad Barham was presented with his 1,000 Point Ball last Friday to mark his 1,000-point milestone which he earned a couple of weeks prior. Barham is a junior who still has his senior year left to rack up some more points in his high school career. February 23 – FHU Huey becomes strikeout king

Needing four strikeouts to pass Josh Hester as (RV) Freed- Hardeman University’s career strikeout leader, the graduate southpaw fanned a University of Mobile (Ala.) Ram in each of the first four innings to place his name at the top of the leaderboard with his career’s 323rd punchout.

March 2 – FHU Lady Lions/Lions Basketball win MSC Titles

The (RV) Freed- Hardeman University Lady Lions saved their best for last when their 20-point fourth quarter was their best frame of the Mid- South Conference Tournament Final. Staving off the Shawnee State (Ohio) University Bear attack late, the Lady Lions claimed the 65-61 victory to hoist the MSC Tournament Champion banner while guaranteeing a berth into the 2023 NAIA Women’s Basketball National Tournament Presented by Ballogy.

For the third time this season, the No. 21 Freed- Hardeman University Lions lined up across the court from the No. 8 Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers. After splitting the regular season series, the largest time the big cats faced off was in Monday’s Mid-South Conference Championship Final. Despite trailing by 16 points at the break, FHU clawed their way to their first MSC Champion banner with a 69-68 win.

March 9 – The Chester County Eagles are State Bound

After defeating Murfreesboro Central Magnet on Monday, March 6, (67-65), the Chester County Eagles Basketball team advanced to the state tournament for the first time in the current TSSAA classification system. The last appearance before that was in 1958. Their first state matchup will be against Ridgeway High School Tuesday, March 14, at 1:15 p.m. at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.

March 16 – Kansas City Shuffle as FHU Lions shut down potent Dordt offense

Entering the game against one of the top-scoring teams in the country, the No. 21 Freed-Hardeman University Lions leaned on their defense to punch their ticket to the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Tournament Round of 16 by topping the (RV) Dordt (Iowa) University Defenders. FHU emerged victorious with a 65-53 final, despite the Defenders averaging 90.9 points per game.

March 23 – CCHS Eagles lose in State Quarterfinals

After making a run to the state tournament for the first time since 1958 and being the first team to make it to the state tournament since the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association started doing the current classification system, the Eagles fell in the first state game to the Ridgeway Roadrunners, 40- 36.

March 30 – Eagles and Eaglettes defeat Adamsville Cardinals around the diamond

The Eagles were the superior bird on the field this past week compared to the Cardinals for both the Chester County High School Eagles Baseball team and CCHS Softball team. The CCHS Eagles competed against them last Thursday on Freed- Hardeman’s turf and won 9-4.

April 6 – Lions claim Sunday win, MSC series with victory over No. 25 Cumberland

Sunday afternoon Zach Sanders broke FHU’s career at-bat record by stepping to the plate for the 780th time, but it was a pair of defensive gems that helped him and the Lions take game three to win the series against the No. 25 Cumberland (Tenn.) University Phoenix 6-1.

April 13 – CCHS Eagles Baseball run rules Hardin Co. 11-1

The Chester County Eagles Baseball team outplayed the Hardin County Tigers on April 4 and runruled them in the bottom of the sixth inning resulting in 11-1.

April 20 – Willamson signs with Bethel

Another Chester County High School athlete signed to play on the next level and continue their athletic career and that player is Judiaz Williamson. WIlliamson was a CCHS Eagles Football player and signed to play at Bethel University on April 11. After finishing a great senior season, Williamson was able to play in the West Tennessee All Stars game.

April 27 – Tennis undefeated entering postseason/ CCHS Girls Tennis win District Team championship

Chester County Tennis has been in control of the courts all season with a 12-0, undefeated record for both the boys and the girls. The CCHS girls team has also claimed the District Championship Team title.

June 1  – 2023 Spring Fling results in silver bling

Chester County did not get any gold hardware, but silver still looks good on them.

At Spring Fling 2023, Chester County was able to be called runner-ups in the state in two events, Boys Tennis Doubles and Boys 1600m race.

Recent Chester County Graduate Stewart Brown was able to place second in the 1600m race which was the last track event last Tuesday. He finished with a time of 4:33.54.

Nathan Britt and Ethan Mullins were the runner-up boys doubles team in the state.

Bella Lamb also ran the 1600m race and earned eighth place with a time of 5:58.386.

Both of them ran the 3200m race. Brown was able to get third with a time of 9:46.28, and Lamb got eighth with a time of 13:07.54.

Brown also ran with his team of 4×800 runners, Silas McManus, Garrett Robison and Dillon Williams. They earned sixth place with a time of 8:33.712.

Last but not least, Hannah Rich threw for Chester County in the discus and shot put and earned fifth place in both of them. In shot put she threw 33 feet and 4.25 inches. In discus, she threw 102 feet and 4 inches.

In addition to Britt and Mullins, Cecily Davis and Grace Compton competed in the girls doubles state tournament but were eliminated in the semifinals. They lost in the third set, 2-1. In the first round they won 2-0.

The two girls, though they lost, have made history for Chester County Girls Tennis as the first girls to compete at state.

Also representing CCHS in tennis were the CCHS Boys Tennis Team and Austin Ketchum in the Boys Singles Tournament. Unfortunately. the boys team and Ketchum could not advance past the first round.

June 8 – None

June 15 – Brown honored with Chester County Independent Athletic Excellence Award

The 2023 Chester County Independent Award goes to a Chester County High School 2023 graduate, Stewart Brown. Brown’s athletic ability is seen in his stamina and endurance while running cross country and track.

Brown is a two-time State Track runner and a two-time State Cross Country runner.

June 22 – None

June 29  – Chester Co. Dixie All-Stars play district tournaments

The Chester County Dixie All- Star teams were competing in the district tournaments. For the girls, the Chester

County Sweetees went undefeated in the district and will play in Collinwood for the state tournament.

The 7/8 Darlings earned themselves a state spot as well. They will be playing in Collinwood.

The 9/10 Angels will be hosting the state tournament.

The 11/12 Ponytails were undefeated in the district and outscored their opponents 29-3. They will be competing at the state tournament in Collinwood.

The 13-15 Chester Co. Belles did not go undefeated but still earned a spot in state competition after earning runner up of the district.

There will also be a 16- 19 girls team hosting state.

For the boys, the 5/6 Chester Co. Boys Nationals were eliminated from the competition, but the 5/6 Americans team will be hosting the state tournament.

The 7/8 Boys team secured a state spot as well and will be playing in Decatur Co. for the state tournament. They competed in Dyersburg for the district championship on Tuesday. They played in the district championship Tuesday evening.

The 9/10 Boys team had yet to play as of Tuesday morning.

The 11/12 Boys team had yet to play their district tournament and the 13-15 Boys unfortunately were eliminated from competition during districts.
