TCHS BOYS HOOPS PHOTO

Trousdale County High senior Dalton Stafford scored 20 and 21 points, respectively, as the Yellow Jackets defeated Lakeland Prep and Gordonsville.

GORDONSVILLE — The Trousdale County High School boys’ basketball team had a good run in the DTC Christmas Tournament last week at Gordonsville High School as they won their first two games to advance to the championship game.

Unfortunately, the title game was not a good outing for the Yellow Jackets as they suffered a 51-23 loss to Smith County.

TCHS opened play with a 76-71 victory over Lakeland Prep — based out of Shelby County — on Dec. 20.

“This was our best offensive game this year, and we needed every point,” Yellow Jacket head coach Ryan Sleeper said. “Lakeland was hot on this day, and I was proud of how the boys made plays down the stretch and were able to grind out a win.”

Senior Kobyn Calhoun poured in a career-high 24 points, and classmate Dalton Stafford scored 20. Seniors Jake Fergusson and Cole Gregory were also in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Titus Mitchell contributed three points, T.C. Rotella two, and Jake Malmin two.

  • The following night, TCHS had to face the tournament host Gordonsville Tigers without Calhoun, but the Yellow Jacket snapped a six-game losing streak to the Tigers with a 48-40 victory.

“(It’s a) big win, and credit goes to our boys for having the mental toughness to beat a solid team,” Sleeper said. “We got down early, and I thought we made some good adjustments at the half, and our boys responded perfectly. The movement and energy on defense was the main factor for us.”

Stafford poured in 21 points, and Gregory had 12. Fergusson followed with nine points, Malmin three, Rotella two and Cooper Henley one.

  • However, the Yellow Jackets couldn’t get going in the championship game.

“Well, I feel like our legs were just dead from the last few days, and battling some sickness didn’t help,” Sleeper said. “But credit Smith County for playing well in their zone. Our shots just wouldn’t fall.”

Gregory was the only player in double figures for TCHS as he scored 11 points. Stafford managed five points, Calhoun four, and Cain Ray three.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 4-7.

Trousdale County will return to action on Tuesday when they host Wilson Central, then will be at home on Friday against Westmoreland for their District 6-2A opener.

The games can be heard on WTNK 93.5 and 93.9 FM, 1090 AM, and funradiotn.com.
