The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Clay County Lady Bulldogs 53-49 at Watertown High School Friday in their third and final game for the Aflac Christmas Classic.
The Lady Hornets rallied from a slow start to take the lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead in the final period to give them a close defeat as the Lady Hornets ended the event with a 1-2 record.
The Lady Bulldogs were in control early in the contest as the Lady Hornets fell behind by double digits in the opening period.
Huntland trailed 18-7 after one quarter.
However, the Lady Hornets were able to bounce back and tied the score at 29-29 going into the halftime break.
The score remained tight throughout the third quarter with the Lady Hornets building up a small lead by the end of the period.
They led 42-38 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs flipped the scoreboard in the final period as they held off the Lady Hornets in the closing moments to beat them by four. Jocy May scored five of Huntland’s seven points in the fourth quarter.
May led the Lady Hornets with 21 points for the game, followed by Yareli Avalos with 13 points and Maddie Burks with seven.
Bailey Morris scored six points and Stratton Davis scored two.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 6-10 on the season.
Lady Hornets 49, Wilson Central 41
The Lady Hornets beat the Wilson Central Lady Wildcats 49-41 at Watertown Thursday in their second game for the Aflac Christmas Classic.
The Lady Hornets opened up a double-digit lead in the third quarter and were able to hold off a late offensive surge from the Lady Wildcats for a victory.
The score was kept close throughout the opening period with the Lady Hornets trailing by a 13-12 margin at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Hornets were able to offensively outpace the Lady Wildcats in the second quarter to create some early separation in the contest.
Huntland led 26-22 at halftime.
The Lady Hornets allowed just three points in the third quarter as they were able to build their lead up to double digits.
They led 36-25 going into the final period.
The Lady Wildcats saved their best offensive period for last, but the Lady Hornets were able to maintain their advantage and went on to win by eight.
Avalos led the Lady Hornets with 16 points for the game, followed by May with nine points and Burks with eight.
Morris scored six points, Davis and Aysia Williams scored four points each, and Kinsley Kilpatrick scored two points.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 6-9 on the season.
Watertown 34, Lady Hornets 28
The Lady Hornets lost to the Watertown Purple Tigers 34-28 on the road Wednesday in their first game for the Aflac Christmas Classic.
The Lady Hornets fell behind early in the defensive matchup and weren’t able to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter as they started the event with a loss.
The Lady Hornets had their lowest-scoring quarter to open the day as they found themselves trailing by a small amount early.
They trailed 9-4 after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets made up a small amount of ground in the second quarter, but they still trailed by a 16-12 margin at halftime.
The Purple Tigers added a few more points to their lead in the third quarter while the Lady Hornets remained just a step behind.
Huntland trailed 25-18 going into the final period.
Burks scored nine of Huntland’s 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hornets chipped away a small portion of the deficit before losing by six.
Burks led the Lady Hornets with 11 points for the game, followed by May with seven points and Avalos with six.
Davis and Williams scored two points each.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 5-9 on the season.
They will next play Tuesday at Madison County High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
