KINGSPORT — The Dobyns-Bennett swimming and diving team defended home turf on Tuesday night at the Kingsport Aquatic Center, sweeping the boys, girls and combined team titles at the annual Northeast Tennessee regional championships.
The girls romped to the title with 540.5 points. The boys had 450 points, just squeaking past rival Science Hill (383).
The Indians combined to score 990.5.
Eastman Credit Union was the title sponsor for the meet. Dunkin’ Donuts and McAlisters provided the food for the coaches, officials and media.
DELLINGER DELIVERS
D-B sophomore sensation Evie Dellinger captured four gold medals, winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.00) and the 100 butterfly (59.51) and was part of two winning relays (200 medley and 400 free).
“I really like the 200 individual medley because I get to do all the strokes,” Dellinger said. “I really like the challenge it gives me. The 100 fly is something I hated at first, but I’ve learned to love it.”
Dellinger was barely off the meet record in the 200 IM, missing it by less than a second.
“I’ve still got two years to get that one,” she said. “It’s nice to get the experience of being a four-time winner here. I really like doing the relays because I love doing stuff with my teammates.”
THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Science Hill sophomore Annalee Price showed out in her 50-yard freestyle, taking home the gold in 24.99 seconds.
Her start was impressive and so was her turn in her season- best effort in the event.
“Starts, turns, underwaters and all the little tiny things are incredibly important because that’s pretty much all you have,” Price said.
“The race is so short that little things like that can shave .01 off your time and that matters a whole lot.
“I feel really good going into the state meet,” she added. “I’m getting really close to getting my goal of 24.19 and I feel really good about the preparation I’ve done and am going to do going into state.”
Price was also swam on the Lady Hilltoppers’ runner-up 200 medley relay team.
