The Cascade Champions fell on the road to the Cannon County Lions, 62-47, on Wednesday night.
After a buzzer-beating three pointer by Henry Stone sent Cascade into the halftime locker room only down three, 36-33, the Champs’ offense simply fell apart, only scoring two points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth.
Stone finished the game with a team-high 13 points. Isaac McElroy scored 11, but he was the only other Champion to reach double digits.
Cannon County was led by a game-high 18 points from AJ Armstrong. Demaurion Locke and Theo Winters joined him in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
In contrast to how the second half went, the first half was extremely entertaining. The Lions set the pace with a 22-19 lead after the first eight minutes of play with both teams taking and making multiple difficult shots.
Predictably enough, the second quarter scoring took a slight downturn as both teams turned to their benches. Cannon County started to pull away late, leading by seven with a little over two minutes to go in the first half. Facing a similar predicament as to the one they overcame at Grundy County, Cascade responded, and after Stone’s buzzer-beater it felt like the visitors were in prime position to steal another district win on the road.
That feeling quickly dissipated however, as for the first 11 minutes of the second half, Cascade’s offense could only muster up two points. Cannon County took full advantage and ended the third quarter with a 47-35 lead.
Cascade could only score one free throw for the first three minutes of the final frame as the Lions built up a 51-36 lead. After a McElroy three cut the lead to 12, Cannon County outscored Cascade 11-8 in the final five minutes to secure the victory, 62-47.
Cannon County improves to 14-6 (2-0) and are scheduled to host Chapel Hill on Thursday for the second night of a back-to-back due to the previous winter storm cancellations.
Cascade falls to 6-14 (1-3) and are tentatively scheduled to host Community in the second Battle of Bedford on Friday night, LIVE on WZNG The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400 starting at 5:45 p.m.
