The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Fayetteville Lady Tigers 65-43 at Eagleville High School Friday in the third-place game for the District 9A tournament.
The Lady Hornets built up a massive lead in the first three quarters and were able to cruise through the final period as the blowout victory snapped a five-game losing streak.
The Lady Hornets ended the opening period on an 11-4 run to pull ahead by a decent amount early.
They led 18-10 after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets also scored the first nine points of the second quarter to boost their advantage up to double digits for the rest of the half.
They led 33-16 at halftime.
A 20-5 run by the Lady Hornets to start the third quarter pushed their lead past 30 points as they entered the final period with a commanding 59-27 advantage. Jocy May scored 15 points of Huntland’s 26 points in the third quarter.
The Lady Hornets rotated their backups into the game for the entire fourth quarter with the Lady Tigers making up some ground before the final deficit settled at 22 points.
May led the Lady Hornets with 21 points for the game, followed by Yareli Avalos with 14 points and Bailey Morris with 10.
Stratton Davis scored five points, Maddie Burks and Emily Stewart scored four points each, Aysia Williams scored three, and Kinsley Kilpatrick and Lynsey Jakubowski scored two points each.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, May and Avalos were named to the all-district team for the season as well as the District 9A all-tournament team.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 11-16 on the season.
They will next play Friday at Cornersville High School or Richland High School in a quarterfinal game for the Region 5A tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
