Payton Agnell punched her ticket to the TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament last week as she went undefeated during the regional tournament.
Agnell went 3-0 throughout to tournament. She pinned two of her opponents and won by a 3-0 decision to place herself at the top of the podium.
“It feels great,” Agnell said after her matches. “I am so grateful for everyone, but I don’t feel like I’m done yet.”
During her first match, Agnell pinned her opponent in 34 seconds after a quick takedown. In her second match, Agnell pinned her opponent in the third period after an even match. After her second victory, she landed herself in the championship round.
Agnell was exhausted after her first two matches. She was patient throughout her final match and did not put herself in difficult positions. During the third period, Agnell was able to get a reversal for two points and a penalty point and ride the time out to take a 3-0 victory.
Agnell said that even though she was tired throughout the match, she was striving to accomplish her goal of being the region champion and making it to state once again. “I can’t really describe it, relieved for the most part, proud of myself because it shows how hard I’ve been training for so long, and like all my hard work is actually paying off and being seen to not only me but to others as well,” Agnell said.
Agnell took home first place and Best Match of the Region 2 Tournament.
As she walks into the TSSAA State Tournament for the third time in her career next weekend she has her goals set high. “My hopes are to be a state champion,” Agnell said. “I’m taking it day by day and trusting God in the process. I’m not done yet.” Agnell gives credit for her success to God, her coaches, and her family this season. She sported a “God’s got this” sweatshirt before her matches at the region tournament. She will take the mat on Friday at the Williamson County Expo Center.
The TSSAA State Tournament will start at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23. Wrestling will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. Results were not available at press time.
