NASHVILLE — Dobyns-Bennett senior hurdler Brayden Simpson had quite the day Saturday at the Knoxville Youth Athletics indoor track and field meet at Vanderbilt, claiming the gold medal in the 60-meter hurdles and finishing with a time of 8.13 seconds.
Fellow D-B senior Nigel Vidale won the high jump as well with a clearance of 6-foot-1 while Wake Forest signee Luke Mussard was fourth in the one mile run, turning in a 4:12.91.
Indoor track and field is not a state-sponsored sport and hasn’t been since the early 1980s, but organizations like KYA have been putting on statewide meets for several years in places like Nashville and in Johnson City when the Mini-Dome’s track was still operational.
There were other locals who did well, too, notably Cherokee freshman Leah Mowell finishing second in the shot put with a heave of 37-7½.
Science Hill’s Carter Brademeyer finished third in the pole vault with a clearance of 14-9.
In the boys shot put, Volunteer’s Kasey Brown was sixth with a heave of 53-11.5.
West Ridge’s Hunter Hawkins was 11th in the long jump (20-3½).
In the girls weight throw, West Greene’s Abbey Cox was second (37-0½) while Volunteer’s Kadey Brown was fourth (34-1½) and Mowell was fifth (33-7).
The Daniel Boone 4,000-meter distance medley relay team was fifth, clocking 12:58.55 and barely missing the school record. The D-B boys finished third in the DMR, too, clocking 10:39.43 while Boone was sixth (10:54.17).
Boone’s Sadie Honeycutt and Fisher Battel both had solid showings in the two-mile run, finishing ninth and eighth, respectively.
Though no one from the area placed in the top five, it should be noted that 22 of the 24 participants in the boys 800-meter run ran under two minutes.
Brentwood swept the team titles as the boys scored 62 points and the girls notched 58.
