On Tuesday night the Elizabethton Cyclones boys soccer team put on a clinic for time of possession and that enabled them to shut out Providence Academy 6-0. EHS (1-0 overall) fired 11 shots on the Knights freshman goalkeeper Austin Beckner while holding the Knights to zero shots on their goal.

“They did well,” said head coach Doug Schultz. “They are adapting to the style we want them to play. As the season progresses, we’ll face tougher opponents down the road and we have to be better. Tonight we moved the ball much better.”

In the 22 nd minute, freshman Thomas Lambert scored with an assist from Will Churchill. Following a corner kick from Churchill, the Cyclones kept the ball in the penalty area and Churchill slid a side kick to Lambert who beat Beckner low and to his left for a 1-nil EHS lead.

In the 26th minute sophomore Drake Teague fired a shot past Beckner for a 2-nil Cyclones advantage and that is how the first half finished. In the second half EHS struck for a goal in the 45th minute with senior Vernon Riley connecting for a three-goal Cyclones lead.

Sophomore Reece Vernon tallied in the 56th minute and the rout was on as EHS constant possession kept Providence at bay. A penalty afforded EHS a penalty kick that was taken by junior Caleb Campbell which Beckner made a diving stop on.

However, the rebound came back to Campbell who followed his shot and scored easily as Beckner was prone on the ground and that made it a 5-nil contest. In the final minute of play Churchill scored his second goal of the night and moments later the clock reached zero but not before some pushing and shoving at midfield that did not get out of hand as cooler heads prevailed.
