A first half that saw Elizabethton dominate even though the match remained scoreless, Morristown West would rise up in the second half as yellow cards flew from every direction. The Trojans scored a pair of second half goals despite a huge effort from sophomore goalkeeper Tucker Taylor as the Cyclones fell 2-nil in boys soccer at Citizens Bank Stadium on Monday.

Taylor made several spectacular saves but in the 57th minute Dylan Lopez fired a high shot that grazed Taylor’s fingertips and Augustin Ortiz raced past him to nudge the ball over the goal line for a 1-nil advantage.

“I got the initial save and then the rebound was just there it was right in front of the goal, and I couldn’t do anything about it,” Taylor said. “I came down and I saw it but couldn’t get back in time.”

The first half was a scoreless affair but the Cyclones seemed the equal of the Trojans and in the 12th minute Justin Velasquez was given a red card for a foul on Drake Teague and he was disqualified from the match meaning that Morristown West had to play a man down.

EHS (1-2 overall) took advantage and held a 3-1 shots on goal lead although nothing got past junior goalkeeper Efrain Silva. In the second half the tempo of the match became more physical and the Cyclones were penalized with four yellow cards with the Trojans getting one.

“We just needed to have more patience, we are still trying to work it outside,” Cyclones head coach Doug Schultz said. “We played with a lot of heart but a good team will force you into old habits. We need to get back on track.”

In the 75th minute Ortiz scored again in a scrum in the penalty area as he took advantage of a screen and slipped a low shot past Taylor for the final tally of the match. In the second half Morristown West had eight shots on goal compared to just two for EHS.
