MURFREESBORO — North Greene senior Jason Britton needed just six points to tie and seven to break the Northeast Tennessee boys basketball career scoring record. He got it in the first quarter.
He and the Huskies built a 15-point lead in the third quarter but couldn’t hold on, falling to Santa Fe 53-50 in Wednesday’s TSSAA Class 1A quarterfinals.
In his final game at North Greene (21-16), Britton shot 12-for-19 with four 3-pointers, scoring 29 points and grabbing seven rebounds and three assists. Britton finished his career with 2,958 points, shattering the old mark of 2,935 shared by Langston’s Kenneth Hamilton (1964) and Tennessee High’s Derrick Hord (1979).
BASEBALL
Union 12, J.I. Burton 2
BIG STONE GAP — A seven-run Bears third inning proved to be the crushing blow in a nondistrict game shortened to five frames.
Leadoff man Keith Chandler carried the big stick for Union, going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. He also scored twice.
Cole Chandler contributed two runs, two walks and a pair of stolen bases in a 1-for-2 day, and Austin Stidham went 1-for-1 and scored twice.
Winner Eli Pleasant pitched the first three innings, yielding a run on two hits. The Raiders managed just three hits, including a double by Miguel Madrigal.
Greeneville 9, Daniel Boone 8
JOHNSON CITY — Noah Murray went 3-for-4, Greene Devils rallied from a 5-1 deficit and held on through a seventh- inning Boone push for the win at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.
Carson Quillen, Colton Richards and Corbin Cannon each went 2-for-4, with Quillen’s day including a double. Graham Jones went 4-for-4 with a triple and a double to lead the Trailblazers. Chandler Justice doubled and drove in two runs, and he and Brayden Blankenship each finished with two hits.
Science Hill 16, Cookeville 6
JOHNSON CITY — The Hilltoppers pushed across 10 in the first, and Josh Marmo and Nate Stoots padded the lead with back-to-back home runs in the third.
Major Osbolt went 4-for-4 and Landon Smelser was 3-for-3 for Science Hill.
SOFTBALL
Sullivan East 3, West Ridge 2
BLOUNTVILLE — Back-to-back singles by Kyndle Hodge and Allie Helbert combined with a wild pitch enabled pinch-runner Kylie Tolbert to score on Natalie Collins’ sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Carly Bradford, who doubled twice, and Helbert each had two hits for the Lady Patriots. Both runs off East pitcher Raquel Del Preto, who struck out six and walked none, were unearned.
Emma Wilson tripled for the Lady Wolves. Pitcher Victoria Browder struck out 10 while walking just one.
