Continuing a strong run that started in the warmth of the Gulf Shores, Alabama, the Cleveland High softball squad kept the hot streak alive with an easy home victory Monday, but a barn-burner Tuesday, in Athens.
Improving to 8-3 on the season, the Lady Raiders exploded for a 13-2, five-inning victory over 2023 Final Four participant Girls Preparatory School to start the week before opening the District 5-4A schedule scoring five times in their final at bat for a 15-10 tally over McMinn County.
Cleveland will journey to East Hamilton Thursday before playing in the Wildcat Classic at Warner Park in Chattanooga Friday and Saturday.
Racing out with a trio of scores to open the game, plus adding a half dozen more in its second at bat, Cleveland hand to hold off a McMinn rally that evened the score 10-all at the end of the fifth frame.
After a scoreless sixth, the Lady Raiders were able to circle the bases five times in the top of the seventh before holding the hosts scoreless for the win.
The teams combined for 27 hits, 15 free passes, a half dozen errors and 19 "ducks left on the pond."
Blasting a home run and lacing a double, junior Allison Farnsworth led the Lady Raiders, going 3-for-4, plus a walk, driving in five runs and scoring four times.
Sophomore Lily Mason also ripped a trio of safeties, plated a pair of teammates and circled the bases herself.
Roane State signee Ashley Allen reached base four times with a pair of hits, plus she was hit twice and drove in a run.
Freshman Emily Patterson drove in a couple of scores with a hit and a walk, plus completed the circuit herself.
Junior Ja'Maya Hill ripped a double to drive in a run and "took one for the team" before coming around to score.
Senior Alexus Folts stroked a hit, was "plunked" and circled the sacks, while Furman signee Lily O'Bryan added a single, was nailed with a pitch and scored twice.
Reagan Campbell, also a 12th grader, collected a hit, a walk, a RBI and a run scored.
The only Lady Raider not to get a hit, sophomore leadoff hitter Landri Nelson got on base with a trio of free passes, drove in a run and scored twice.
Cleveland got the scoring started early Monday, putting a trio of runs on the scoreboard in its first at bat.
The hosts added a solo score in the bottom of the second and then exploded for a 7-spot in the third to push the difference to double digits.
Two more Lady Raiders circled the bases in the fourth frame before GPS finally got the goose egg off the top of the scoreboard in the fifth, with a pair of unearned runs.
Allen provided power both in the circle and at the plate for the victors. The senior hurler tossed a two-hitter, with 10 strikeouts and just two walks, without giving up an earned run.
After getting "plunked" in her first at bat, Allen went 2-for-2, blasting her second home run of the season and driving in a pair of runs.
Farnsworth also went deep, plus had another hit to help her drive in three scores.
Folts went 2-for-3, plus drew a free passes, and plated a trio of teammates, to push her season ribbie tally to 10.
Nelson scored four times after lacing a double and drawing a trio of bases on balls.
O'Bryan helped out with a RBI-hit and completed the circuit herself.
Hill, Patterson and Campbell each drew free passes and came around to score. Hill, who "took one for the team" to plate a teammate, swiped a pair of bases, while Patterson and Nelson also stole a base.
