Walker Valley’s tennis teams hit the road to the south end of Bradley County to begin district play on a windy Tuesday at Bradley Central High School.
Both Herds were coming off an impressive performance last weekend, winning the Cumberland Classic at Fairfield Glades.
Both teams built on that performance as the Lady Mustangs secured a 9-0 win, while the Mustangs squeezed out a 5-4 team victory to complete the sweep.
Walker Valley will take on Cleveland High School at Tinsley Park next Tuesday in another district rivalry match.
The Bear squads will travel to NW Whitfield (Ga.) Thursday and Rhea County Monday.
While the ladies match was not closely contested, new Walker Valley head coach Eddie Coates did see in his young ladies something he believes is critical throughout the year.
“I was impressed at the level of focus from the start which is so important," stated the former Bradley state champion, as well as Vanderbilt standout and former coach.
"The girls really came out ready to play and put a lot of scoreboard pressure on early. That’s something we hope to continue throughout the year.”
His team certainly took command early with a quick 3-0 lead as all doubles matches went to the visiting Lady Mustangs.
The singles line followed suit with 8-0 wins from Ensley Collins, Caileigh Collins, Ella Klepzig, Mary Beasley and Libby Dunkle, while Ava Graham tallied an 8-1 win.
The gentlemen’s match turned into a back and forth affair with the Mustangs taking a 2-1 win following doubles play.
Doubles pairs Jose Guerrero and Noah Ufer took an 8-6 win over Bradley’s Britton Carter and Preston Henderson, while the Blue-and-Gold also secured an 8-4 win with Cash Coates and Mitch Brown triumphing over Micah Lee and Bryson Stinnett.
Bradley cut into the lead as Parker White and Hunter Fields won 8-3 over Cael Coates and Turner Clayton.
The hosts evened the match at 2-all as Fields earned an 8-3 win over Clayton in singles play.
Walker Valley did not stay idle long before Brown reclaimed a 3-2 edge for his Mustangs earning an 8-3 win over Bryson Stinnett.
Cael Coates moved the Mustangs within one win, securing a tight 8-6 victory over White, but Bradley fought right back as both Carter and Lee claimed 8-5 victories to even the match at 4-all.
First year Mustang Noah Ufer was able to feel the joy of securing a cross-county rivalry win as he tipped the scales for Walker Valley, winning his match 8-6 over Henderson.
“Our boys earned a good win today,” Coach Coates shared. “Bradley’s guys really competed well and fought for each point - credit to them and their coaches.
"We were in some tight matches and I’m proud our guys fought through and came out on top. Excited to get the win and hopeful to build on it.”
