Late last week we revealed the inaugural 615 Preps girls all-area basketball teams. Now it’s time to release the boys teams starting first with the large class.
The 615 Preps large class coverage area includes teams in Division II-AA as well as Classes 4A and 3A.
Players selected to these teams are selected based on their season-long stats and nominations from their head coaches. Here’s a look at the inaugural 615 Preps large class boys teams:
LARGE CLASS: 615 Preps small class all-area girls basketball teams
SMALL CLASS: 615 Preps small class all-area girls basketball teams
Player of the Year
Tyler Tanner, Brentwood Academy, Sr.
Tanner didn’t end his high school career with another gold ball but he did end it finally winning the DII-AA Mr. Basketball.
It could be argued that he was the best player in the state this year regardless of class leading a young Brentwood Academy side back to the DII-AA championship averaging 26 points per game, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and shooting 52% from the floor.
Coach of the Year
Mark Wilkins, Independence
Probably the easiest pick of any for this year’s all-area awards.
Wilkins joined his older brother and dad as a state champion this season leading Independence to its first ever state title. In year three at the helm, he led the Eagles to the district title, region title and eventually the state title while closing out the year with 17 straight wins and a final record of 32-6.
First Team
Point Guard
Fred Bailey, Pope Prep, Sr.
Why chosen: Bailey led the Knights to the Final Four for the first time averaging a team-high 17.1 points per game. He also averaged 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals.
Shooting Guard
Jett Montgomery, Independence, Sr.
Why chosen: If Tanner was 1A for our selection for player of the year, Montgomery was an insanely close 1B. A Mr. Basketball finalists, Montgomery led the Eagles to their first state title averaging 21 points, 4.1 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Small Forward
Cortez Graham, Hillsboro, Jr.
Why chosen: Graham upped his game this season leading to the Burros to substate and 23 wins. He finished the year averaging 15.6 points, 5.0 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.2 blocks.
Power Forward
Daniel Cochran, Brentwood, Sr.
Why chosen: Cochran capped off his senior season as the District 10-4A MVP and leading the Bruins back to the Class 4A state tournament. He averaged 22 points, 9.0 rebounds, two assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.1 steals.
Center
Christian Brown, Franklin, Jr.
Why chosen: Brown was a force in the paint all season long for the Admirals. Shooting 55% from the field and grabbing 528 rebounds, he averaged 16.8 points and 10.1 rebounds to go along with 2.0 blocks and 1.3 assists.
Sixth Man
Carter Webb, Siegel, Jr.
Why chosen: Webb was a scoring machine for the Stars leading them to a 23-4 record. He capped his junior season averaging 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals.
