Franklin County's Brayden Henley begins to run toward first base after connecting on a pitch in this file photo from earlier in the season. Henley had a hit, a walk and an RBI for the Rebels Monday in their 2-1 win against Marshall County High School.
The Franklin County Rebels beat the Marshall County Tigers 2-1 at home Monday for their fifth win of the season.
The Rebels took an early lead in the low-scoring contest and were able to stay in front for the rest of the day to pick up their first district victory of the year.
A walk and a single with two outs in the top of the first put runners in scoring position for the Tigers early, but Franklin County pitcher Sam Vincent induced a groundout to get out of the jam.
The Rebels then scored in their first turn up to bat as Brayden Henley hit a two-out RBI single to score Vincent from second base and make it a 1-0 game in the bottom of the first.
Caden Brown led off the bottom of the second with a triple and scored on a wild pitch moments later to give the Rebels their second and ultimately final run of the day.
The Tigers were able to avoid the shutout as a one-out error in the top of the sixth gave them a baserunner who later came around to score following a single and another error to make it a 2-1 game late.
However, the Tigers stranded the potential tying run on second to end the top of the sixth, and they were retired in order in the seventh inning as the Rebels clinched the narrow one-run victory.
Vincent pitched a complete game for the Rebels in the win with 12 strikeouts, two hits, two walks and one unearned run allowed.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 5-8 on the season and 1-1 in district play.
They will next play Wednesday at Marshall County High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
