Marc Motley, the longtime head coach of the Carroll County High School girls basketball program, is stepping down from his position after more than two decades.
The Carroll News reported that Motley informed his team on March 15 hat he is resigning as head coach after 22 seasons. He cited a diminished interest in “stuff outside of basketball,” such as watching film and scouting, as well as missing his son’s middle school basketball games this winter, as reasons for his departure.
“That is a tough thing for me to take,” Motley told The Carroll News. “It’s pretty tough, but he has five more years and I don’t know how much I will see him play if I am still doing this.”
Motley collected a record of 433-130 with Carroll County, a win rate of more than 76%. During his tenure, the Cavaliers went to 13 state tournaments, reaching the final four five times and winning back-to-back Class 3 state championships in 2022 and 2023.

“Of all the years, I really enjoyed the basketball, but I enjoyed being around those kids and seeing them 10 years later when they come back, like when I won my 300th or 400th [game], or seeing their kids start to come through and play in AAU,” Motley told The Carroll News. “Some are even coming back and coaching in our AAU program. That to me is what it is all about. It comes full circle. And now it is time for someone else to come in and take the reins.”
Motley said he will continue to serve as a teacher at Carroll County High School and is floating a potential return to coaching in the future.
“I enjoyed the 22 years I did it. I just resigned. I didn’t retire,” he told The Carroll News. “I’m not going to say I won’t do anything coaching related. I’m still pretty young and if I decide I want to get back into it in a year or so, the door is still open. It was just time for a change.”
