Mother Nature has been anything but kind to local high school teams. As a result of a steady rainfall Thursday afternoon, only two local soccer teams took the field.
Unicoi County kicked off the Blue Ridge Classic at Providence Academy on a high note, edging Chuckey-Doak 1-0.
Victor Luquin accounted for the game’s lone goal, which came in the second half. Zeke Campbell made sure the score was enough, finishing with 16 saves to earn the clean-sheet win, improving Unicoi County to 5-4 overall.

ELIZABETHTON — Riley Vernon recorded a hat trick to lead Elizabethton, as the District 1-AA frontrunners evened their overall record at 6-6. The Cyclones are 3-0 in district play.
Reece Vernon and Drake Teague both found the back of the net twice. In addition, Teague handed out three assists, with Quincy Hall dishing out another.
