Down 9-2 in the fourth inning, Dobyns-Bennett rallied for a 10-9 victory over Unicoi County Friday night at J. Fred Johnson Stadium with the winning run scoring from second on an errant pick off attempt at first.

It was the second straight walk-off win for the Indians (21-4) and the fourth in the last week.

Only two of the Blue Devil runs on the night were earned although Reid Bogart did crack a two-run single in the first and Tanner Berry blasted a three-run homer in the fourth.

It was the first roundtripper of the season allowed by Dobyns-Bennett pitching.

“Wasn’t a good start,” mustered a laryngitis-stricken Dobyns-Bennett coach Ryan Wagner. “They hit it pretty good and we didn’t make plays in the field. We’ve got to be better defensively.”

Starter Baker Correll fought into the fourth allowing four hits and two earned runs. Mason Barnett came on and was touched for three unearned runs.

Senior Cade Maynor came on in the fifth and worked three scoreless frames, striking out three and allowing only one hit for the win.

“Our pitching was bad, but Baker wasn’t sharp after throwing last night,” whispered Wagner. “Cade was really good again in relief. He’s been really good in that spot.”

The Tribe rally began with a single run in the fourth as courtesy runner Tray Wyndam raced home on a passed ball.

Three more runs came in the fifth. Andrew Reilly tripled home a run and Jackson Bishop and Mason Kerkhoff drove in runs with single.

Another three runs cross in the sixth. Reilly doubled home another run and scored on Tegan Begley’s single. Begley would later score the tying run on a wild pitch.

Unicoi pitcher Chris Chavez got the first two out in the bottom of the seventh but then walked Reilly and Begley. Facing a 3-1 pitch to Cam Hayworth, Chavez’ pick-off attempt of Begley at first sailed over first-baseman Ty Engle into the fast foul space territory at the Fred allowing Reilly to score the winning run from second.

“We got some guys on base, got some hits, found another way to win,” Wagner said.

Berry finished with four RBI’s for the Blue Devils while Bogart went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in.

Begley was 3-for-4 for the Indians with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Reilly had the two extra base hits in three at-bats to go with two walks, scoring all four times. Mason Kerkhoff finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and one run driven in.

The Tribe is off until next Tuesday at Science Hill.
