Franklin County's Alyssa Sherrill drops her bat and begins to move down the first-base line after hitting the ball during a game Sunday at Lawrence County High School. Sherrill had a double and an RBI in the 16-1 loss.
The Franklin County Rebelettes lost to the Lawrence County Lady Wildcats 16-1 on the road Sunday for their 18th loss of the season.
The Lady Wildcats opened up a big lead in the first inning and put the game out of reach in the bottom of the third to give the Rebelettes a district defeat.
Franklin County head softball coach Kelly Kennedy said that her team made some defensive mistakes that the Lady Wildcats were able to capitalize on throughout the day.
“Overall, I think that we didn’t field the ball cleanly, and that contributed a lot to (Lawrence County) getting extra bases and being able to score runners,” she said. “You’ve got to come out and play both sides of the ball.”
The Rebelettes recorded the first run of the day as Paislie Edge hit a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on an RBI double from Alyssa Sherrill to make it a 1-0 game in the top of the first.
However, the Lady Wildcats batted around in the bottom of the first and scored nine total runs in the frame with a few Franklin County errors helping to extend the inning.
The Lady Wildcats scored two more runs in the bottom of the second to grow the deficit to double digits at 11-1, and a five-run third inning from Lawrence County triggered the mercy rule to end the contest as the Rebelettes lost by 15.
Kaylee Morris started the game for the Rebelettes and recorded one out on a strikeout with seven hits, one walk, four earned runs and five unearned runs allowed.
Dalayna Marshall pitched the remaining 2 1-3 innings for Franklin County with two strikeouts, nine hits, three walks, five earned runs and two unearned runs allowed.
With the loss, the Rebelettes moved to 7-18 on the season and 3-6 in district play.
They will next play Monday at home against Tullahoma High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Kennedy said that having both of her team’s main pitchers available for the rematch against Tullahoma should be a benefit after taking a 20-10 loss to the district rival on March 19.
“Last time, we were playing without Dalayna, who’s a really good complementary pitcher to Kaylee Morris. I think when both of them are on and they’re working well together, that is a very solid combination of kids, so Tullahoma hasn’t seen that from us yet,” she said before referring to the high-scoring nature of the previous game between the teams. “I thought the last time we played (Tullahoma), we really put the bat on the ball. I think that they just hit a little bit better than us.”
