WASHBURN — University High defeated Washburn 11-4 on Saturday afternoon to capture the Region 1-A baseball championship.
Cooper Stevenson had a double and triple on a day he drove in two runs and scored twice. The Bucs had 12 hits overall as Peter Boynewicz also had two hits and two RBIs. Sam Henley also finished with two RBIs. Jack Harman and Patrick Boynewicz each finished with two hits and two runs scored.
Sam Duncan had seven strikeouts and picked up the win, giving up five hits and three runs. Knox Poston allowed no hits over the final two innings.
Washburn 3, North Greene 2
WASHBURN — The Pirates tied the game in the sixth inning and won on a walk-off in the seventh to eliminate the Huskies from the postseason.
North Greene scored both runs in the first inning with RBIs by Owen Pierce and Don Stansfield. Isaac Gaby was the only Huskies player with two hits. Mason Smith went the distance and had six strikeouts in the hard-luck loss.
Region 2-A
West Greene 7, South Greene 1
PIGEON FORGE — The Buffaloes scored five runs over the first couple of innings to get the best of the Rebels.
Mason McCamey had three RBIs, including a two-run double in the second inning. Maddox Garber drove in two runs and Conner Campbell scored twice. Braden McCamey was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits and no runs over five innings. Campbell entered in the sixth inning and closed the game.
The Rebels scored the game’s first run on Dustin Crum’s RBI ground out. West Greene was eliminated by Alcoa 11-1 in a later game.
SOFTBALL
Cloudland 6, North Greene 1
ELIZABETHTON — Izabella Christman went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run, to lead the Lady ’Landers over the Lady Huskies to win the District 1-A championship.
Savannah McCoury and Eowyn McCoury each added 2-for-4 efforts. Reagan Turbyfill had eight stirkeouts, giving up two hits and no earned runs. Heidi Harmon gave North Greene the early lead with a RBI single in the second inning.
