Greeneville Boys Win Third Straight Class AA East Sectional Title; Lady Vikings Runner-Up

Led by three-event winner Zayden Anderson, Greeneville captured a third consecutive Class AA East Sectional Title Saturday at the University of Tennessee’s Tom Black Track.

The sophomore won the 100 meters (10.71), 200 meters (21.59) and the long jump (23-4¾) and also finished runner-up in the triple jump (44-4¾) to score 38 of the Greene Devils’ 100½ points.

Just behind was runner-up Signal Mountain which compiled 84 points. Volunteer was third with 74 points.

The Greene Devils’ Darien Humphries was runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles (16.22) and Greeneville also got third-place finishes from Jacob Moore in the pole vault (12-6) and Isaac Gibson in the 800 meters (1:59.71)

Taren Clarity finished 4th in 100 meters (11.11) and Trey Bailey 4th in 1600 meters (9:46.95).

The Greeneville 4x100 meter relay team was second (43.01) and the 4x800 meter relay squad placed third (8:21.48).

Each of the top four finishers in the events earned a spot in next week’s TSSAA State Track & Field Championship in Murfreesboro.

Kasey Brown brought home a win for Volunteer in the shot put (56-6½) and Roman Borghetti-Metz in the 800 meters (1:54.90).

Jackson Clonce was runner-up in the discus (157-6) with Brown third (154-8). The Falcons Lucas Gilliam placed third in the high jump (6-0) while Jordyn Winegar-Collins was third in the 110 meter hurdles and John Ross came home fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.

Elizabethton was sixth with 44 points paced by discus winner Diesel Russell, who bested Volunteer’s clone and Brown with a heave of 159-8. Defending state champion Adrian Wynn of David Crockett was fourth at 151-9. Wynn was also third in the shot put (49-0½). The Cyclones’ John Siepert was runner-up in the 300 meter hurdles (40.65) and Jeremiah Norris was third in the 400 meters (50.45).

Lamarkus Dunn of David Crockett crossed first in the 400 meters (49.60). Signal Mountain’s Joshua Pote doubled in the 1600 meters (4:25.11) and 3200 meters (9:43.21).

Other state qualifiers included Cherokee’s Kolden Singleton, third in the triple jump (43-11¼) and Lofton Hayes, fourth in the 400 meters (50.96).

The Tennessee High Lady Vikings finished as runner-up with 64 points, but were well behind sectional champion Signal Mountain which piled up 170½ points.

Local athletes swept the field events with David Crockett sophomore Aaliyah Story winning the long jump (18-8½) and high jump (5-4). Story's long jump mark broke the NET all-time record of 18-8 set by Tennessee High's Jennifer Cannon.

Volunteer’s Aliah Laster won the pole vault (11-0) tying Tennessee High's Fairyn Meares' all-time NET mark. Lady Chase Wolfenbarger was first in the triple jump (37-4), Leah Mowell of Cherokee was first in the shot put (37-10½0 and second in the discuss (120-00) behind winner Liahan Nave of Elizabethton (120-10).

Volunteer’s Jacie Begley ran to a win in the 800 meters in 2:18.07.

The Lady Vikings also received points from Jenna Reecher, fourth in the 800 meters (2:23.76); Wolfenbarger, third in the 100 meter hurdles (15.48) and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (47.30).

David Crockett was third with 54 points while Volunteer sixth with 39 and Elizabethton seventh with 36.

Maggie Bellamy and Hannah McLain of Crockett went third (5:06.79) and fourth (5:14.88) in the 1600 meters. Bellamy came back to also place third in the 3200 meters (11:24.07).

Marlee Burkely of Signal Mountain swept the hurdles events, winning the 100 meters in 15.31 and the 300 meters in 44.92. Anderson County’s Ava Moody was also a double winner, earning gold in the 1600 meters (5:05.93) and the 3200 meters (11:13.43).
