The David Crockett soccer team’s historic run hasn’t been a coincidence, especially with the top goal scorer and assist leader in Northeast Tennessee.
It’s tight at the top, but striker Diego Silva Cook has scored 20 goals through the district championships — one more than Brogan McGhee of District 1-AAA champion Dobyns-Bennett. Cook’s hat trick last week helped the Pioneers take a step they’ve never taken, a trip to the region tournament.
Jael Rodriguez had a lot to do with it. His 18 assists are the most in Northeast Tennessee, two coming in the District 1-AA semifinals. Cook and Rodriguez have been on both ends of the the scoring, as Rodriguez has 11 goals to his name and Cook six helpers. University High’s Matthew Roberts (8 goals) ranks second on the assists list with 12.
Unicoi County’s Zeke Campbell did his part to keep the Blue Devils in every match they played this season. Campbell’s 186 saves led Northeast Tennessee by far. After helping Crockett hold off Elizabethton for the District 1-AA championship, Pioneers’ goalkeeper Bradley Gouge is second on the list with 104 saves.
It’s a safe bet West Ridge goalkeeper Cole McDavid racked up a large amount of assists himself, en route to earning District 1-AAA Goalkeeper of the Year honors. But his final stats weren’t available at press time.
And the plus signs next to Greeneville’s statistics aren’t a misprint, at least for now. The Greene Devils on the list are known to have accumulated at least the amount of goals, assists and saves they were credited, although some matches were missing from the totals. Goalkeeper Tanner Myers faced only one shot on goal during district play, which he saved.
