Stadium to be named for Robinsons

WATERTOWN -- Ceremonies have been planned for halftime of Friday's Watertown - Red Boiling Springs football game as school officials will commemorate the naming of the WHS stadium in honor of the Robinson family.

From Friday on, the home of the Purple Tigers will be known as "Robinson Stadium" in recognition of the contributions of Watertown High head football coach Bill Robinson and his late father -- the legendary coach Brownie Robinson.

"The Robinson family name is as much a part of Watertown High as the purple uniforms our athletes wear," said Watertown principal Rick Martin.

"Bill Robinson and his father Brownie have always given unselfishly of themselves for the boys and girls of this community. Naming the stadium in their honor is the least we could do to recognize their contributions."

Bill Robinson is presently in his third tenure as head football coach at Watertown High. A former Purple Tiger quarterback for his father, Robinson has compiled a career record of 134-107 (a winning percentage of .556).

His high water mark for wins in a season was a record of 11-1 in 1976. The 2003 version of the Purple Tigers stands 6-1 on the season.

Brownie Robinson spent 11 years as the Tiger head man and compiled a record of 72-37-5 (a .631 winning percentage), including back-to-back 10-1 seasons in 1970 and 1971.

Beginning in 1963, a Robinson patrolled the Watertown sidelines for 27 consecutive seasons before Bill first "retired" prior to the 1990 season. He has since taken over the football job on two other occasions.

Football wasn't the only sport the Robinsons coached.

Brownie was a highly successful coach of the Tigerette basketball team and Bill has at one time or another coached both basketball teams, as well as the baseball and softball squads at Watertown High.

"It's deserving that Watertown is naming their stadium for the Robinsons," said Gordonsville athletic director Mark Medley. "Mr. Brownie and Bill devoted their lives to high school football and had a great impact on the lives of young people."

Brownie Robinson also coached the football teams at Carthage, Mt. Juliet, Macon County and a team in Texas during his career.
