Memphis East boys basketball coach Maurice Miller has resigned after one season with the program, he confirmed to The Commercial Appeal on May 12.

Miller, a Mr. Baskebtall winner at Raleigh-Egypt and former Georgia Tech guard, was hired in May 2024. After a slow start to the 2024-25 season he led the Mustangs to the TSSAA Class 4A state tournament, where the team fell to Bradley Central. East finished 17-14.

Miller's departure marks another brief stay for a East basketball coach. Shelvie Rose departed after the 2023-24 season after his lone campaign, eventually taking the FACS job.

Following the team's elimination in Murfreesboro, Miller had expressed optimism about East's future, with the team's roster being comprised mainly of underclassmen who'd return as the team drops to Class 2A next season.

However, East, the state's second-winningest boys program with eight state championships, will now make that transition with a new coach next season.
